HOW TO WEAR A CORSET CASUALLY

wear-a-corset-casually

Corsets have been a wardrobe staple for decades. Once though of as an undergarment, they have been evolving into a flexible garment that can be worn in the bedroom or as part of normal day wear. Because they are made from different fabrics (including silk, brocade, satin, denim, cotton, latex), you are sure to find a corset that blends seamlessly into your wardrobe.

When worn correctly, a corset is a wonderful accessory that accentuates your curves. They may look uncomfortable but when you finally learn how to wear it, the opposite is true! Click HERE to learn how to put on a Chicastic corset! They key to dressing up a corset lies in creative layering. Are you up for the challenge? Here are several ideas you can try!

PANTS or SKIRTS

Corsets themselves are a complete outfit, as minimal as they may seem. If you add too much in the way of flashy details it will take attention away from the parts of your body you are trying to accentuate. Instead of a flashy pant or skirt, try a subtle or plain high waisted trouser or pencil skirt. You want to stay away from shorter skirts if you don’t plan to layer a cardigan or blazer over it. Corsets are already sexy, so balance is exremely important. A sexy and modest idea would be to pair a pencil skirt with a well fitted top, then layer a corset over it. Keep the skirt and shirt the same color to avoid color overkill. Or you can try a denim pencil skirt and high heeled sandals. For casual weddings, one would do well with a medium skirt and lace corset. Try a full tulle, satin, or linen choice, but why not pair that same lace corset with a different fabric entirely? A white seersucker a-line skirt is an unexpected and chic option. Make sure to add some sparkly jewelry to up the glam factor just a bit! It is still a wedding, after all!

SKINNY JEANS

A popular item these days, skinny jeans are a great pairing with corsets. Just make sure that your jeans really hug your legs. Any droop, slouch, or baggy area will take away from the entire look. A sheer top under the corset will add class and cover you up without smothering away the sexiness. Try a regular t-shirt with espadrilles or sandals for a more laid back look. Layer on some bracelets to complete the ensemble.

T-SHIRTS

Wear a close fitting casual tee with a corset and a pair of your favorite jeans (skinny or otherwise) for a funky casual look. On hot days, a pair of shorts would also work nicely. Just make sure the shorts aren’t too short! On cool autumn days, add a pair of leggings or thick tights for added warmth and color!

SHRUGS or CARDIGANS

For another look appropriate for fall, a cardigan or shrug is a great way to soften the sexiness of a corset. Wear a shrug for a sexier look, or a cardigan to cover up a little more. Either way, you’re sure to turn some heads! This pairing works well with form fitting bottoms like skinny jeans, pencil skirts or leggings.

JACKETS or BLAZERS

An edgy leather jacket can take your corset to a whole new level. Add skinny jeans, boots, and a colorful scarf or bold necklace for a modern take on Sandy from the musical Grease! For something a little more grown up, switch the leather and boots for an upscale blazer and heels. Blazers instantly tone down the inherent sexiness of corsets. If your corset is a bright color, pair with a neutral blazer or jacket. If your corset is a subtle color, then any bright color or patterned blazer is a definite YES!

DRESSES

Corset dresses are very popular on the red carpet or for weddings and other formal occasions, but there is no reason NOT to wear one casually! You can also try an off the shoulder jersey knit dress with an underbust corset. As long as the dress is fitted close to your body, you should be able to pull this off. Don’t try this with a loose dress such as a shift or the extra fabric will bunch up and not be very attractive or flattering.

Sexy Dinosaur and Dragon

Sexy Dragon

By now you’ve pretty much seen a TON of DIY Halloween costume ideas from us, and believe me, they are so much more fun to make than buy readymade at the store! I truly believe that the most fun of Halloween is at the getting ready part! Some of the costumes we’ve put together have been fun, sexy, silly and like our last post, pretty hilarious. If you’ve learned anything by now, it’s that you can make anything sexy. You can even become a sexy Donut by wearing a pair of beige or brown leggings, a gold or yellow corset, and wrapping a pink chiffon scarf around your neck that you’ve bedecked with tube beads to look like sprinkles. Voila, sexy donut! And hilarity ensues!

This costume is one we haven’t yet come up with (don’t know how this one got missed!) but our Emerald Green Satin Corset can be paired with the popular “mermaid leggings” but instead of seashells in your hair, add a couple of spikes or dragon headband and boom you’re a dinosaur! Or lizard! Or dragon! Long nails, lizard-y earrings can complete the look. All you need is a green sequined embellished clutch and a pair of sequined black heels and BOOM you’re a magical reptile!

Desperate Times Costume

Desperate Times DIY Costume

Okay, let’s admit it. There are times when we get invited to a party and we already make up our minds that we aren’t going. Maybe you have to work early the next day or the people there are just blah. So you make plans to Netflix and chill at home by yourself, put a bucket of candy outside the door with a sign that says “Please take one!” and hope the neighborhood kids don’t just grab the bucket and run, leaving your front door a target for fresh eggs! Then your best friend calls an hour before a GREAT Halloween party and somehow cajoles you into going! Well, you can’t just show up as NOTHING, can you? But how can you pull off a costume at the last minute? HOW?

Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Here’s how!

First, grab a sexy top to wear, like a satin corset. Next, find a silly bottom garment to wear, like a grass skirt! Of course, you have to somehow tie the two pieces together, so a floral lei that matches the corset can bridge them together. A rose wristlet can carry your essentials while still looking part of this costume. And of course, if you’re going to go full crazy, may as well dig out a pair of wings from LAST year’s Halloween party and crystal stiletto heels (that you chose to go to, incidentally) and boom, there you are! A Flower Fairy Hula Angel!

Now this is just one example, but you can absolutely create your own type of crazy costume based around any one of Chicastic’s satin corsets!

Modest Genie Costume

Modest Genie Costume

As much as Halloween can be a fun excuse to wear something sexier than usual, sometimes you have to try to be modest. Especially if you’re the designated door answer-er! Stay covered up, yet sexy in this genie costume. First, find a pair of layered shimmery harem or belly dancing pants. Pick up the accents in the pants with a gold or yellow satin corset. It will shape your body, boost your bosom and add a bit of sex appeal without showing too much skin! For extra assurance in covering up, add a silk chiffon scarf to wrap around your shoulders when you answer the door. Slip on a pair of shimmering crystal embellished heels and finish with a matching rhinestone crusted clutch bag!

DIY Sailormoon Halloween Costume

Sailormoon

If you were a kid during the 90’s, chances are you were familiar with the Japanese cartoon Sailor Moon! It’s about a group of extraordinary teenage girls who fight evil by the light of the moon! The song was real catchy, too! If you aren’t familiar, check it out HERE!

Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts costumes are SO easy to make! You may even be able to put one together with items from your own closet, if you’re in a pinch! Of course, a little more sophisticated and grown up, of course! Why not?

First, start with either one of Chicastic’s White Satin Corsets or White Lace Corsets (the material doesn’t matter, it’s how you style it that will get your point across!). Add a short blue skirt (for Sailor Moon – the other Sailor Scouts wear different colored skirts). Attach a bow to the front of your corset, and attach smaller matching bows to the arms of white satin gloves. Instead of the iconic red boots, wear a pair of crystal red rhinestone heels! Carry a neon yellow clutch to mimic Sailor Moon’s hair and her moon symbol! Wrap a blue chiffon scarf around your neck to symbolize the sailor collar and you’re done!

The best part about Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts costumes is that you can modify certain pieces to represent each of the girls, creating one epic group theme costume! Match your scarf, skirt, and clutch to that of your favorite Sailor Scout and there you go!

DIY Frida Kahlo Halloween Costume

Frida Kahlo DIY Costume

Frida Kahlo is one of the most influential artists ever to live. Her art documents her physical and mental anguish after a bus accident left her permanently disabled. Some of her paintings also detail her relationship with artist Diego Rivera. Her signature look is her own homage to her heritage, of which she was very proud.

Recreate Frida’s characteristic outfit with one of Chicastic’s red lace trimmed corsets! Layer a colorful flowing skirt over that, and wrap a silk chiffon scarf around your shoulders. Tie up your hair and pin a flower crown upon your head to finish your look. While Frida likely wore flats or low heels, you can have a little fun with a pair of red crystal stilettos.

Remember, when dressing up as a historical figure, especially one as revered as Frida Kahlo, it helps to familiarize yourself with their story! Read all about her here!
